A few days before KU Day at Kauffman Stadium, the Kansas basketball coaching staff told Frank Mason he would have the honors of throwing out the first pitch.
Mason, a senior guard, isn’t sure why he was given the duty. He had never played baseball in his life — “Not at all, not even recreation,” Mason said — but there he was on Sunday, throwing the first pitch to junior Devonte’ Graham before the Royals faced off against the Minnesota Twins.
Mason spiked his first pitch into the dirt, and it rolled to the screen behind home plate.
Mason and Graham joined Kansas coach Bill Self and a collection of other basketball players at the game, including sophomore Carlton Bragg and junior Svi Mykhailiuk.
