Gary Bedore, who has covered University of Kansas athletics for three decades, is joining The Star.

Bedore is The Star’s new “KU insider” and will team with lead KU reporter Jesse Newell in a one-two punch solidified by the storytelling and commentary of The Star’s Sam Mellinger, Vahe Gregorian and Blair Kerkhoff.

“KU basketball is an elite program that seemingly demands more attention each year,” said Jeff Rosen, The Star’s Assistant Managing Editor/Sports. “We saw a unique opportunity to add Gary to our roster, and we grabbed it.”

Bedore, who covered the Jayhawks for the first time as a KU student in 1978, worked for newspapers in Emporia, Kan., and Oklahoma City before joining the Lawrence Journal-World in 1979.

“To be honest, this classifies as a dream come true,” Bedore said. “As somebody who grew up reading the Chicago papers, I always had a desire to work for a major metro newspaper/multimedia company. Now I get my chance.

“I know my dad, a big sports fan and big reader of the sports pages, would have been proud of me.”

The Star plans this fall to offer a new basketball-specific app and website that will serve as fans’ go-to source for all the latest news and analysis from the program that’s won 12 straight Big 12 championships under coach Bill Self.

The new app and site will deliver the latest scores and schedule, recruiting buzz, podcasts, photos, video and more.
