The Longhorns tasted defeat in the CBE Classic for the first time when they fell to Brigham Young 86-82 in Monday’s semifinals at the Sprint Center.
Texas won tournament championships in 2005, at Municipal Auditorium, and 2009.
“We love playing in this tournament,” Texas coach Rick Barnes said.
And at the Sprint Center. The loss dropped Texas to 11-6 all time in the building.
The Longhorns advanced to Big 12 Tournament title games at the Sprint Center in 2008 and 2011, falling to Kansas both times.
Rollie Massimino thought he was headed to Palm Beach, Fla., to consult with Northwood University officials about starting a basketball program.
“I get down there, and they told me I was going to coach, too,” Massimino said.
That’s how Massimino’s NAIA career started. On Monday, a day after he was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, Massimino was on hand for another ceremony, the NAIA’s ribbon-cutting for its expanded office, one block from the Sprint Center and the CBE.
Massimino, whose Villanova Wildcats won the 1985 NCAA championship in a monumental upset over Georgetown, has taken Northwood to the NAIA Division II Tournament in Branson, Mo., in each of his seven seasons at the West Palm Beach, Fla., school.
