Betty Rae’s Ice Cream and Sorbet is headed soon to the Waldo area.
Passion projects are always fun but especially if there is ice cream involved. David Friesen and Mary Nguyen met at the University of Missouri in Columbia and both spent time behind the counter at Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream.
Now they are married and making good on their dream of owning their own parlor with Betty Rae’s Ice Cream and Sorbet, coming soon to the Waldo area.

The shop will include a mix of classic flavors that ice cream fans have come to depend on, such as mint chocolate chip, cookies and cream, and cookie dough but it will also branch out into more adventurous flavors.
They intend to infuse some flavors with herbs, tea or seasonal fruits.
The parlor will also make classic creations such as shakes and sundaes, and upon the approval of their liquor license, some adult shakes as well.
They will also feature an espresso machine and plan on offering affogatos—a shot of espresso poured over a scoop of ice cream.
Friesen says that they want to invoke a warm, neighborhood-friendly vibe and are working with local artists to give the space an interesting aesthetic.
They will also offer activities for kids such as coloring pages, a chalk wall and a window bubble into the kitchen to see where the magic happens.
