Indulge in the taste of the season with these local dinners

Kurlbaum Tomatoes

Get an authentic tomato-tasting experience Friday at Kurlbaum’s farm starting at 6 p.m. Chef TJ Wright from the Brio at the Plaza will be on-hand to prepare a multi-course meal to benefit the Shawnee Mission East Fund. Tickets are $60 apiece and can be purchased here. Here’s a look at the menu:


Caprese crostini, served chilled over fresh mozzarella

Shrimp and grits—Seared shrimp in black pepper cream sauce, accompanied by charred tomato & smoked Gouda grits

Sky’s tomato sampling—An assortment of the Kurlbaums’ finest served fresh from the vine


Chilled tomato gazpacho topped with sour cream and croutons


Tuscan club pasta—Campanelle pasta tossed with fresh tomato, salami, capicola, and pepperoni, finished with julienned basil and reggiano cheese

Salmon fresca—Finished with heirloom tomatoes, basil, feta cheese, balsamic glaze and pesto vinaigrette

Grilled chicken alla Kurlbaum, topped with wild mushrooms in a tangy tomato butter sauce


Panzanella bread salad

Marinated tomato and mozzarella salad


Tomato pound cake topped with vanilla gelato and wildberry sauce

Chicken N Pickle

Local chef Alex Staab is behind this five-course charity dinner, which benefits Wayside Waifs. Diners will be able to indulge in each course on Chicken N Pickle’s Boulevard Rooftop starting at 7 p.m. on Aug. 14. Tickets are $70 apiece and include wine pairings. Oven-roasted Kurlbaum tomatoes, Farm to Market ciabatta, buratta, garlic, oregano and lemon

Trip Tip Steak

Coriander-crusted tri-tip steak, grilled Kurlbaum tomatoes, chimichurri, pine nuts, cilantro salad

Lidia’s Kansas City

Lidia’s annual Tomato Dinner features a five-course meal for $55 a person and $30 extra for wine pairings plus tax and gratuity. The dinner takes place in the Crossroads restaurant’s Terrazza on Aug. 24 starting at 6:30 p.m. Reservations can be made by calling the restaurant at 816-221-3722. Here’s what’s on the menu:
