Kurt Knapstein’s Obsession

The local interior designer shares the design feature he can’t get enough of

Why, you ask, is lighting so important? “It is like jewelry for a room,” Knapstein says. “A light fixture in a space can make or break a room. You always want to find the ‘right’ one.”

Gone are the days of chandeliers and pendants being an afterthought. These ceiling adornments now rule the showrooms and have stolen the show at design shows across the nation. You’ll find thousands in every style for every room. To narrow down your search, Knapstein recommends choosing the right fixture by defining the purpose of your room and taking note of the furniture, art, accessories and colors found within.

“When the perfect fixture is in a room, it elevates the level of everything else going on in the space,” he says.

Prominent pendants in entryways and foyers set the stage for what’s inside. Most homeowners also focus on choosing the statement piece above their dining table. For a beautiful yet functional glow, “a dimmer helps set the tone with the proper level of light in any space,” Knapstein says. Keep in mind that no room is off limits, and size does matter.

If you are looking to add a dash of trendiness to your home, go for the gold. Pairing timeless crystal details with gold and antique-brass finishes are very en vogue, featuring sophistication and sass all in one.
