Sleek cabinetry and stainless steel details give a Sulgrave condominium sophisticated style

Laura Greenbaum’s Sulgrave condominium is filled with contemporary art and a sophisticated mix of modern furniture and antiques. “But my kitchen was falling apart,” Greenbaum says with a laugh.

The kitchen before. The kitchen before.

Knowing she needed to renovate it, she thought she would interview several design firms and first approached Geri Higgins at Portfolio Kitchen and Home. “She had such good ideas, she’s so nice to work with, and she gets the job done,” says Greenbaum, that she didn’t even bother to interview anyone else.

“She likes sophisticated environments and everything in her home speaks to that,” Higgins says. Greenbaum knew she had to keep the same footprint as the original kitchen, which is open to the rest of the apartment. “Our goal was to have a fully functional kitchen that supports her culinary pursuits and her entertaining,” Higgins says.

Glossy acrylic European-style slab cabinetry with extra details like the stainless steel trim around the door frame met their mutual goals. Stainless steel Thermador appliances and Calcutta Vagli marble countertops complete the look. Details like the narrow recess between the cabinets and the ceiling speak to the craftsmanship of the cabinetry.

“I wanted a sleek, New York apartment-style kitchen that had to tie in to the rest of the space,” Greenbaum says.

“The kitchen is a direct expression of her,” Higgins says. Even to the fine art that’s on display, including a Wayne Thiebaud Cakes lithograph and the Ken Ferguson Hare vessel holding pride of place on the island.
