Shades of Summer

Protect your eyes in style this summer with five of our favorite pairs of shades

When it comes to this season’s sunglasses, the newest styles seem to say go big or go home. The attention-grabbing silhouettes—Elton John would approve—are sure to add a touch of glamour to whatever your summer may bring. Here, five pairs that really caught our eye.

When placed around the outer edges of frames or across the brow line, flourishes like enameled flowers, beads or crystals prove fashion never has to be boring. Pair these gems with a straw hat or a printed headscarf a la 1950s and you’re set for convertible rides, outdoor weddings or a summer tour of Italy. And just try not to smile while wearing them. Italia Independent, $389, from Milan Optique on the Country Club Plaza.

Channel your inner Penny Lane in Almost Famous with this revived retro shape—perfect for festival hopping, a sunset show at Starlight or jamming out on your lunch break. Keep it classic with lightweight metal frames or go a little bolder with acetate ones. Tip: circular lenses tend to suit square-shaped faces best.  Prada, $300, from Halls on Grand in Crown Center.

Given the size of these, they’ll offer added sun protection making them great whether you’re poolside or stepping out of the office on the sunniest of days. The usual upswept outline goes softer, rounder, and—you guessed it—bigger this season. Star-quality: 10; cattiness: zero.  $15, from Webster House in the Crossroads.

Not your daddy’s sunglasses. You’ve seen this same look—almost—in old photographs, but here it’s taken up a notch both in size and with the cobalt blue hue. The playful shape manages to feel vintage and futuristic at the same time. Win-win. Camden, $525, from Barton Perreira on the Country Club Plaza.

This style is nothing new—in fact, we’d wager you might already own a pair. But when the shape goes bigger and rounder, and the traditional metal frames get swapped for plastic ones or the dark lenses for colored ones, they feel thoroughly modern again. Slip them on and you’ll look chic no matter where you’re jetting off to this summer.  Illesteva, $300, from Standard Style on the Country Club Plaza.
