Many of us wear denim more than anything else in our closet. It makes investing in good denim and finding the perfect fit essential. We are also finding that the perfect denim “piece” could be in the form of a jacket or shirt. Joni Johnson of Kansas City-based brand Standard Style and Baldwin Market shares the top denim trends and what to look for this fall.

1. Beyond Bottoms: The denim skirt continues to be a strong basic, and a nice alternative to jeans especially during the warmer months. Also look for different silhouettes like dresses and rompers, which transition nicely into fall. Baldwin Aurora romper in light indigo wash, $265

2. Jackets: These have become a staple in our wardrobe, so it is key to find the perfect wash and fit. Classic is always best. Go for something without too much distressing in a classic shade of blue. Baldwin Stevie Jacket in pure wash, $265

3. Totes: Tote bags always come in handy and a denim one is as versatile as those made of leather. Inzo tote from Design In The City, $125

4. Crops & Flares: The kick flare also makes a return. The newness this season will be pairing short ankle boots with shorter denim, which shows a little bit of skin. This look is definitely progressive, but unique. It gives us a new way to style our denim, and all of the fun boots for fall. Baldwin Stella Jeans, $315

5. Blazers: Denim has even seeped into the more elegant and professional of fashion pieces, such as tailored blazers that can be worn with business attire and dresses. Veronica Beard Caden Dickey Jacket, $495

6. Mules: The mule loafer is also hot this year and looks great with cropped pants and longer skirts. Dolce Vita Elva studded mule from J. Quinn Boutique at Nell Hill’s, $130
