This fall sees the debut of an underground boutique focused on showcasing the best in denim. Located in the refurbished basement of River Market men’s clothier Houndstooth, new concept Denimhound stocks world-class denim in men’s, women’s and unisex fits and will offer darning and repair services as well. The shop carries classic and modern brands from all over the world, including American makers Levi’s and Railcar Fine Goods, French manufacturers A.P.C. and S.M.N., Canadian outfit Reigning Champ and Japanese producer Naked & Famous.
The basement space is small, but feels bright, inviting and open thanks to clean, white surfaces and a well-placed mirror. 70s decor and a single wall covered in colorful, floral wallpaper add charm and character to the shop. Owner Jeff Covitz aims to use the space to bring in otherwise out-of-reach denim offerings to the Kansas City area, as well as expand his portfolio of brands to include something more casual and modern. “It’s like when a New York chef has their high-end fine dining concept, but they open a fast casual concept,” he says. “You can reach more people and offer more choices in the market.”
