Four home trends Tamara Day is loving right now [partner]

If you haven’t read about her locally, you’ve likely seen Tamara Day renovating Kansas City homes on her DIY Network show Bargain Mansions. The Leawood mom is transforming outdated and oversized spaces into modern marvels fit for families who enjoy stylish living.

Next month, she’ll be at the Greater Kansas City Home Show March 23-25 at Bartle Hall, where she’ll speak about her hometown experience and answer questions from the audience. Here, she shares the current home trends she’s incorporating in her designs:

  1. Open shelves

“I think it really makes the kitchen feel more open and part of the living space,” Day says. “There are so many ingenious ways you can store what you need in lower cabinets and pantries. Open shelving makes the kitchen feel like more of a living space and less of a utilitarian space.”

  1. Statement lighting

“Statement lighting is where it’s at for me. I love large, overscale lighting and unexpected use of light,” Day says. “It’s the jewelry of the room, which is cliché but so true. It can take a dull, boring room and transform it into something fabulous.”

  1. Bold tile

“Instead of doing an 18-inch backsplash, I love taking tile all the way to the ceilingm” says Day. “It’s dramatic, and depending on the tile, can make kitchens and bathrooms feel glamorous. It upgrades everything.”

  1. Mixed materials

“I’m not a big fan of having one big species of wood in a space,” Day says. “I love doing lots of different layers and types of woods in a room, like a beautiful raw hardwood floor with a walnut or birch island. The contrast keeps it interesting and more eclectic.”
