Nicole Lobdell, co-owner of Park Place’s Hand + Land, shares her beauty routine

Nicole Lobdell and her cousin, Jessica Moler, opened Park Place’s Hand + Land last summer after seeing a need for natural beauty products in the K.C. area. What resulted was a space offering small batch goods that use minimal ingredients. We caught up with Nicole to get the lowdown on her personal beauty routine.

What’s your beauty mantra?

After 36 years I have figured out the key to my happiness – to live simply.

What is your daily beauty routine like?

I begin my day with a hot shower or cold water splashed upon my face. When I am crunched for time my “go to” is John Masters Stimulating Spearmint Shampoo + Rose Apricot Hair Milk as a leave-in conditioner. When I have the luxury of a slow morning, I’ll use Rahua’s Rainforest grown Shampoo + Conditioner with Palo Santo, which is energetically cleansing and up lifting.

I am a bar soap junkie! It’s one of those things I will actively seek out whenever I am shopping or on vacation. I have too many favorites to list, however my criteria for a good soap includes minimal natural ingredients and scented only with essential oils. When the shop opened I discovered Konjac Fiber sponges. These 100% natural and biodegradable vegetable fiber sponges gently exfoliate and detoxify the skin as well as extend the life of my beloved Palo Santo body wash.

Now that I’m out of the shower it’s time to select one of my many deodorant sprays, pastes or sticks! I like them all, but here are a few I love: Soul Sunday’s The Pits paste, Meow Meow Tweet Tea Tree and Erbaviva Lemon Sage spray. I find that my body responds best when I switch it up.

Hands down my favorite face cleanser is Marble & Milkweed’s Rose & Frankincense Facial Cleanser. This makes my skin silky smooth and leaves me feeling BEAUTIFUL!

I melt a small dab of cleanser in my wet palm and smooth it on my face. I usually let it set for a few minuets and rinse with warm water. Then I spritz my face and décolletage with a hydrating toner. I’m a fan of Soul Sundays Gentle Toner, the clary sage helps create a natural balance in skin and the geranium promotes healthy skin cells.  I then blend one pump of Om Aroma’s Truffle Face Cream and a few drops of Marble and Milkweed’s Nourishing Serum for instant glow and velvet soft skin.

My makeup routine is very minimal; sometimes I’ll stain my cheeks with W3ll People’s blush or a swipe of Good For You Herbals bronzing stick. I have very sensitive eyes, so I give my eyebrows a quick brush and curl my lashes, that’s it. Easy peasy.

After years of sitting through 3-hour cut and coloring appointments loaded with toxic chemicals, I decided to free up my schedule and grow out my greys.

I love Meow Meow Tweets Body Oil for moisture and for pearly whites I’m a fan of minty Ayurvedic toothpastes that contain neem and peelu.

What beauty products/services do you splurge on?

Give me a great foot massage and you’ll have my heart! I am currently looking for a new place, If anyone has a recommendation give me a holler.

What are your favorite at-home remedies?

A healing salve! It is my remedy for all kinds of ailments. It works great and was one of the first products I ever made. A dear friend shared his magical recipe, so it’s not really mine to give. Thanks for that Matt!

What’s the best beauty tip you’ve been given?

Oils- do not be afraid of them! Rub them in your hair and slather them on your skin. I always thought, “OH, oils are going to make my face oily and cause me to break out.” Well folks, oils are a game changer! I thought that squeaky clean skin was the way to go but I was just stripping the natural oils, making my face even dryer and depleted. I no longer have dry flaky patches and rarely ever get a pimple. I wish I would have found them sooner.

What are your biggest beauty mistakes?

Besides not using oils sooner. Oh where do I begin…… Big bangs, yep grade school and a perm, grade school again! In fact my best friend and I had perms at the same time! I have so many great pics but I’m not sharing those!

What one product could you not live without?

For Strange Women Cardamom + Spruce natural perfume. This smell makes me feel alive! I treasure it.

What one product/service will you never try?

Brazilian Wax. Ouch, need I say more!

When do you feel the most beautiful?

Besides when I am smelling of Cardamom and Spruce…. it’s when when my husband gives me those eyes or I’m in the company of my mom and grandma. Their effortless beauty is unmistakable, we’re 3 generations of grey hairs cruising the streets.

What do you want women to know about beauty?

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Pick a few good products and they will last. Less is more.

How has opening Hand + Land influenced or changed your outlook on beauty?

It has definitely opened my eyes to “green washing” in the industry. It’s daunting looking at all the brands claiming to be natural but are still packed with harmful ingredients. We learn something new every day and are committed to weeding those brands out of Hand + Land. All I can say is read your labels!

What ingredient/product has been a beauty game changer for you?

Oils, again! And toners, they help open the pores and break down the acid mantle allowing the nourishing oils penetrate deeper into the skin.

Stay tuned for the next installment of Beauty Routine, where Jessica Moler, the other half of Hand + Land, shares her tips and tricks.
