Here Comes the Sun

K.C. beauty experts recommend their favorite products for playing it safe in the sun

Protective foundation doesn’t have to look heavy and mask-like. Carmody Ward, beauty associate at Halls Plaza, loves Giorgio Armani Lasting Silk UV Foundation, which has an SPF of 20. “It keeps everything looking lightweight and silky,” Ward says, “and it gives you a luminous, matte look.” $59 from Halls on Grand.

Summer can play havoc with your hair, thanks to the triple threat of heat, humidity and UV rays. The latter are especially tough on color-treated tresses, says stylist Shelby Herrick. He suggests the new Bumble and bumble Color Minded UV Protective Styling Balm, which smooths flyaways and frizz and helps keep tones true. “Apply it to towel-dried hair, and comb it through from the scalp to the ends,” Herrick says. $28 from Shelby Herrick Salon in Fairway.

Dermatologists recommend wearing an SPF cream year-round to protect your skin from sun damage—and it’s especially important during the summer when you’re spending more time outside in the sun. Meggan R. Newland, a physician at Saint Luke’s Dermatology Specialists, says Epicuren X-Treme Cream is her current fave. “It provides great coverage with an SPF of 45 and is yellow instead of white so there is no white/gray film on my face,” Newland says. “It is also a smooth application and very moisturizing without being greasy.” $39 from Spa on Penn in Westport.

2012_05_spaces_097_r1-4Give dry, peeling lips the kiss-off with a moisturizing and gently exfoliating balm. The staff at The Spa at Briarcliff recommend Murad Energizing Pomegranate Lip Protector. The balm adds shine and a hint of barely there color while protecting your pout from UVA and UVB rays. $15 from The Spa at Briarcliff.

You know it’s important to re-apply sun block periodically when you’re out at the beach, so it makes sense that you’d do the same with your facial SPF on sunny days. For sun-protection that you can apply over your make-up, dermatologist Meggan Newland recommends Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 30. “It’s a powder that is supplied in an applicator brush for late- day SPF touch-ups,” says Newland. Perfect for primping just before a patio happy hour. $30 from Sephora.
