Shelby Herrick Salon moves to Woodside Village
After nearly five-and-a-half years in the Fairway Shops, Shelby Herrick just moved his namesake salon to a larger space in Woodside Village. We chatted with Herrick to find out what the new space brings (a terrace, for starters) and what he’s most excited about.
On why he wanted a new salon: “We were kind of shoulder to shoulder in our Fairway salon. We’d grown quickly and needed more space to expand our Shelby Herrick Salon family, which encompasses our team and our guests that come to the salon. We built an amazing foundation that’s focused on the guests’ experience and communicating with them about what they’re wanting, needing and expecting.”
On choosing Woodside Village: “It’s a central location with easy access for anyone in the city. The parking is wonderful. And we’re excited to have other tenants next to us, such as Ulah, Blue Sushi Sake Grill, The Roasterie and Eat Fit Go.”
On what you’ll find inside: “The new salon is 1,700 square feet, plus we have additional office space and a team lounge upstairs. We have separate cutting and coloring stations and a terrace that overlooks Rainbow Blvd. so guests can sit out there during warm weather. I worked with the local architects Studio Build and mentioned to them that salon acoustics can be horrible. So now I have this very cool looking suspended ceiling that also helps with the acoustics.”
On the look of the new salon: “I always feel like a salon should be a neutral canvas so I wanted to use off-white for everything. When Studio Build asked me to choose a deeper color for part of the salon, I was really hesitant. We’d used some zebrawood, white lacquer, a chocolate-y walnut stain, and a brushed antique-gold hardware. I decided to use navy, because everybody looks great in a navy suit. Patricia O’Dell, who is one of my guests in the salon and writes for Kansas City Spaces, suggested Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore. It turned out beautifully.”
On the new services: “We’re adding eyebrow shaping and makeup application. We’ve had so much demand for brow shaping, and it’s nice to provide makeup touch-ups and applications for special occasions. Our main focus is always going to be hair services, and we’re adding a third hair care line to the Shu Uemura and Kerastase products we currently have. And we’ll offer more evening hours.”
