Feisty Missouri Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill announced Monday that she has breast cancer and — in modern-day American politics — that could have brought out the haters on social media.
But in a pleasant surprise or, if you prefer, a perfectly predictable response, even most of McCaskill’s political enemies wished her well.
Maybe, even in the days of the odious Donald Trump, there’s a limit on how low American discourse has fallen.
From an ultra-conservative talk-show host:
Missouri’s Republican senator expressed his support.
The U.S. House Speaker reached across the aisle.
A Republican candidate for Missouri governor played nice.
Rush Limbaugh’s brother weighed in.
McCaskill’s longtime friends in the liberal world issued their best wishes.
And late in the day, A Republican presidential candidate reached out.
