Early today, KansasCity.com carried a story that really shouldn’t have passed the smell test. Oregon protestor Ammon Bundy had said on Twitter that he was doing the same thing as civil rights icon Rosa Parks.
“We are doing the same thing as Rosa Parks did. We are standing up against bad laws which dehumanize us and destroy our freedom.”
Bundy’s critics pounced at what they considered an outrageous comparison. The Washington Post published a story about it, and KansasCity.com picked it up.
But it wasn’t true. The Twitter account @Ammon_Bundy is a hoax, as has now been revealed.

I don’t normally comment on other news organizations’ operations, as that’s not my place. But The Kansas City Star inadvertently got sucked into this one — a danger for any wire story.
KansasCity.com editors have done the right thing in simply deleting the original story from the site. I manage The Star’s Facebook page, and I have posted a prominent correction there as well.
