I've heard from multiple readers who objected strongly to Sunday's Sports section cover's main headline, about Michael Phelps' disappointing performance in the Olympics: "Dud in water."
I'll let this emailer's eloquent message do the heavy lifting:
Love him or hate him personally, we couldn't have asked for more stellar performances over the past years than those given by Phelps. Representing our country, Phelps has brought home 16 medals, 14 of them gold. The one time he doesn't medal, you label him a "DUD."
I guess it's more fun to come up with a glib caption and kick a man when he's down than to be fair and objective. Ryan Lochte swam an amazingly impressive race, brought home the gold, and all he got was a 2 inch photo in the lower corner (sans clever caption).

The only saving grace on the Sunday Sports Daily front page was Sam Mellinger's insightful commentary on the race. I hope this is not an indication of how you will be portraying all of our 2012 Olympic athletes. They deserve our respect, appreciation, and some fair reporting, not the equivalent of a childhood playground 'point and laugh' when they fall.
