As the first pontiff from the New World, Pope Francis is taking a progressive approach in picking his first group of cardinals.
His emphasis is on inclusiveness with an outreach to Asia, Africa and Latin America. Those areas happen to be among the largest for Catholics these days so it makes sense that Pope Francis would lean in that direction.
But the move shifts the church from tradition to often overlooked areas such as the Ivory Coast, Nicaragua, Burkina Faso and Haiti. Some Catholics may not like the new direction.
The pope, however, is moving the church to keep up with the needs of the people.
