People buy tickets, dream of lottery riches

Just in time for gift-giving, the Mega Millions jackpot could reach an astounding $1 billion by Christmas.

When no one hit the jackpot on Friday, the amount grew to $550 million. It is expected to continue to increase if no one picks the correct winning numbers, and that’s no easy task.

Even though the total is causing people to line up at gas stations, convenience, grocery, liquor and drug stores nationwide to purchase tickets for their chance to dream big, CNN reports that individual lottery ticket holders have a better chance of being killed by an asteroid than winning the lottery jackpot. It was the second-highest in history on Friday.

It is streaking toward last year’s record prize of $656 million.
