Most of the people in the Kansas City area on Saturday need to concentrate on marathon avoidance.
Run from it and not to or in the 26.2-mile course. That won’t be easy because the Kansas City Marathon is supposed to start downtown, jog west through Westport continue along Ward Parkway, trot along 75th Street before heading north on Wornall Road, swinging east to Paseo, plodding along 18th Street and then collapsing back downtown at the finish.
That will lock up a lot of Kansas City real estate. Police will block traffic.
Helpless motorists and people stuck in the affected neighborhoods will be fuming and tuckered out marathon runners and walkers will straggle out the frustrating wait to the finish, which is expected to be about 1 p.m. But count on that going a lot longer.
It won’t be pretty.
The marathon starts at 7 a.m. with nearly 12,000 runners participating. About 1,800 volunteers and 135 off-duty police officers will assist.
Good luck getting around on Saturday.
