Cheerios merits high praise for its national 30-second TV ad featuring a black dad, white mom and a biracial child.
In the ad the girl seeks nutritional feedback from her parents. Then she pours a pile of Cheerios on her father’s chest, thinking it will make his heart healthier.
But the cute commercial has picked up racist and hateful responses from viewers on YouTube. Cheerios asked that the comments section be turned off.
That is the response of a lot of companies that encounter racist hate on the Internet. The offensive feedback shows that a sizable part of the American public is unwilling to accept the growing number of interracial couples and mixed-race children.
Yet, this is a big segment of the U.S. population, and it will continue to get larger. Cheerios is to be commended for not shying away from featuring this all-American family.
