Wednesday in the minors: Duffy loses in rehab start, while Selman, Mills get wins

Left-hander Danny Duffy continued his rehab stint Wednesday and took the loss as Class AA Northwest Arkansas fell 11-1 to Tulsa.

Duffy, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, allowed five hits and three runs in four innings. He walked one and struck out six. Duffy threw 71 pitches and 46 were for strikes.

Andy Ferguson, who relieved Duffy, was hit hard, allowing six runs in 1 1/3 innings on five hits with three walks.

Center fielder Brett Eibner hit solo homer in the sixth inning for Northwest Arkansas.

High-A Wilmington

Left-hander Sam Selman didn’t allow an earned run over five innings as the Blue Rocks beat Carolina 6-4.

Selman, who was a second-round pick in last year’s draft, gave up three hits and four walks with two strikeouts. He allowed one run, but it was unearned.

In his last four starts, Selman has allowed four earned runs in 20 innings (1.80 ERA).

Wilmington got off to a fast start as Justin Trapp opened the first with a double and scored on Daniel Mateo’s single.

After the Mudcats got the unearned run in the top of the fourth, Wilmington scored twice in their half on Tyler Chism’s two-out, two-run single.

In the fifth, the Blue Rocks flexed their muscles. Mateo hit a one-out solo homer and Lane Adams followed with a double. After an out, Schlehuber tripled home Adams. Jack Lopez’s RBI single made it 6-1.

Low-A Lexington

Sevens were wild for Legends starter Alec Mills. He scattered seven hits over seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts as Lexington beat Savannah 4-0.

Mills, 2-2, is a converted starter and the move seems to suit him. In two starts, Mills hasn’t allowed a run over 13 innings. He’s given up just 10 hits, hasn’t walked a batter and has recorded 12 strikeouts. All told, his ERA is 1.32. Mills, a 6-foot-4 right-hander, was a 22nd round pick in last year’s draft.

Raul Mondesi had an RBI single in the third, Michael Antonio added a two-run double in the sixth and Bubba Starling had a run-scoring single in the seventh.
