Kyle Zimmer had a no-hitter through five innings, but left with a lead that Class A Wilmington ultimately lost a ninth-inning lead in a 3-2 loss at Lynchburg.
Zimmer, the Royals’ top pick in last year’s draft, walked one batter through five innings, but gave up a leadoff bunt single in the sixth. After a walk and a sacrifice to start the seventh, Zimmer was replaced. He gave up the two hits, walked three and struck out six in 6 1/3 innings.
It remained 2-1 until the bottom the ninth when Robinson Yambati relieved. He gave up a single and committed two errors to load the bases. Yambati got a strikeout, but a forceout got a run home and Lynchburg won it when Yambati threw a wild pitch.
