Sunday in the minors: Starling homers in Lexington's win

Class A Lexington broke open a tie game by scoring three in the bottom of the eighth inning and beat Augusta 7-4 on Sunday.

The Legends did their damage in a span of four batters. With one out and the score tied 4-4, Nicholas Cuckovich singled and Alexander Marquez followed with a walk. Ethan Chapman’s double scored Cuckovich as Marquez took third.

A wild pitch by Derek Law scored Alexander Marquez as Ethan Chapman moved to third. Terrance Gore then followed with a single that got Chapman home and finished the scoring.

The Legends trailed 4-3 when Bubba Starling hit a solo homer to tie the game in the fifth inning. Starling was one for three with two walks and two runs scored.

Starter Aroni Nina gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts in five innings. Chas Byrne tossed three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits, and got the win. It was his first appearance of the year.

Alec Mills pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.

Class AAA Omaha

Iowa had a seven-run lead by the second inning and knocked off Class AAA Omaha 10-6.

Storm Chasers starter Ryan Verdugo gave up eight runs (five earned) on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings and took the loss. Verdugo struck out five, but walked four and allowed three home runs.

Omaha clubbed three homers as well. Xavier Nady (solo shot), Adam Moore (two-run homer) and David Lough (two-run homer) did the honors. Designated hitter Chad Tracy went three for four and raised his average to .370.

Class AA Northwest Arkansas

Tulsa scored three times in the bottom of ninth and stunned the Naturals 4-3.

The comeback ruined what had been shaping up as a nice victory after starter Brooks Pounder gave up one unearned run on one hit in five innings.

Second baseman Angel Franco hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and that tied the game 1-1 for the Naturals. In the seventh inning, catcher Manny Pina’s two-run double put the Naturals ahead 3-1.

Class A Wilmington

The Blue Rocks managed just five hits and lost 4-1 against the Winston-Salem Dash.

Shortstop Jack Lopez had a RBI double in the eighth inning that accounted for the only Blue Rocks’ run.

Wilmington starter Aaron Brooks gave up one run on six hits in 4 2/3 innings and took the loss.
