Wednesday in the Royals farm system

This is a look at what’s happening with teams in the Royals minor-league system.

Wilmington pitcher Kyle Smith won the Carolina League’s Pitcher of the Week award for the period of April 4-14.

In two starts, Smith did not allow an earned run in 8 1/3 innings, striking out 14 and walked six. Smith is tied for the Carolina League lead in ERA with Christopher Beck of Winston-Salem, and he is tied for second in strikeouts (two behind teammate and league-leader Kyle Zimmer) and is fifth in opponent's batting average against (.161).

Smith, a 20-year-old right-hander, was the Royals fourth-round pick in the 2011 draft. The No. 12 Royals prospect according to Baseball America, Smith has collected quite a few honors in his brief pro career.

He won pitcher-of-the-week honors twice during the same week in the Pioneer and Midwest Leagues last year.

As for Class A Advanced Wilmington’s game on Wednesday, the Blue Rocks defeated the Carolina Mudcats 5-2 at home. Starter Aaron Brooks gave up three hits and one run in five innings with five strikeouts.

Reliever Spencer Patton also struck out five, but it was in three innings of work. In 8 2/3 innings this year, Patton has fanned 15.

Catcher Kenny Swab went three for four with a double, triple and two RBIs. Tim Ferguson also had two RBIs.

Class A Lexington

Bubba Starling went two for six with a double, but he also struck out four times as the Legends dropped a 4-3 decision in 14 innings in Augusta.

Lexington scored a pair in the second inning, but Augusta had single runs in the third and sixth and sent the game to extra innings. In the top of the 11th, Lexington pushed a run across, but the Green Jackets tied it again and eventually won in the 14th with a run against Mark Peterson.

Starling is batting .143 on the season, while shortstop Raul Mondesi, who is rated fifth in the Royals organization by Baseball America, is hitting .231.

Class AAA Omaha’s game was postponed because of rain and Class AA Northwest Arkansas had a day off.
