As part of the fallout from Monday’s rainout, the Royals were required to find a spot starter for Saturday’s game against the Blue Jays, with Joe Blanton making a cameo in the rotation for one more game.
Blanton (2-2, 3.74 ERA) gave up nine runs in 7.2 innings in his last two starts. The team decided to accelerate Yordano Ventura’s rehab program to take Blanton’s space on Thursday.
But with both Chris Young and Edinson Volquez pitching on Tuesday, the club needed an arm for Saturday. Volquez will start on Sunday, Yost said.
“It creates a hole in your rotation,” Yost said.

After Tuesday, Yost does not intend to use Blanton in relief. He needs to keep him fresh for Saturday.
