A Missouri lawmaker who beheaded and gutted a chicken on Facebook is facing a backlash in online petitions seeking his removal or resignation.

Rep. Mike Moon, an Ash Grove Republican, posted the video earlier this month to announce his bill proposing a Missouri Right to Life Act.

“What does slaughtering a chicken have to do with banning abortion?” reads the introduction to an online petition on the Care2 website, authored by “Care 2 Activists.” That petition, which showed nearly 92,000 supporters Sunday morning, calls for Moon’s resignation.

Another petition on the Change.org website is seeking Moon’s removal from office, saying the behavior in the video is “frightening and sociopathic.” That petition, with a goal of 2,500 supporters, recorded 2,258 Sunday morning.

The video shows Moon at his farm with his hand gripping the head of a chicken suspended from a tree. He slices the head off and goes through the process of clipping its feet and wings before slicing it open and pulling out internal organs.

He promotes his bill —House Bill 14 — as he works, saying, “We’ve been called back for this special session for the primary purpose of supporting life, protecting the unborn specifically.”

As he removes organs by hand, including apparently its heart, he says, “I think we need to get to the heart of the matter here, so today I’m filing a bill that will lead to the stopping of abortion in the state of Missouri, and I hope you’ll support it.”

The video had generated 438 comments by Sunday morning, for and against his efforts. Moon in subsequent posts defended recording on video the preparation of a chicken for cooking, including pictures of chicken meat on a stove top. He also posted a link to the Care2 petition with the comment, “This is funny.”

Moon has, in the past, gone the petition route himself, seeking support for anti-abortion efforts through the iPetitions website ahead of the 2016 legislative session.
