To paraphrase Robert F. Kennedy, some people ask “why” and others “why not?”
Count James Pirtle of Olathe among those who ask “why not?” — at least where Interstate 470 is concerned.
He wants to know whether the freeway will be extended north from Interstate 70 in Independence to Interstate 35 in the Northland, thereby completing a loop. The answer
If any highway projects are on the horizon, Mell Henderson would know about them. He is the director of transportation at the Mid-America Regional Council.
Henderson said there’s nothing in the area’s “Transportation Outlook 2040” about continuing the freeway northward. Instead, Missouri 291 will continue to be the link from I-70 up to I-35 in Liberty.
“Our traffic forecasts suggest that with the exception of the area immediately around I-70 and the area immediately around I-35 in Liberty, M-291 can handle the traffic demands for that connection,” Henderson said.

The Watchdog says he thinks a lot like Pirtle. Every time he uses an extension cord, he asks, “Why knot?”
