The Republican Governor’s Association wasted no time in launching its first negative ad of the fall campaign against Democrat Chris Koster.
On Wednesday morning, just hours after Tuesday’s primary that saw Koster claim the Democratic nomination and Republican Eric Greitens pull off a surprisingly easy primary win, the RGA launched what it called a six-figure statewide TV-ad buy.
The spot criticizes Koster for, among other things, spending millions in taxpayer dollars to remodel his office and another million to give his staff pay raises.
“Chris Koster, just another self-serving politician, putting himself first,” an announcer in the ad says.
The buy suggests that in a year with few competitive governor’s races, the Missouri contest is one that is going to attract loads of outside money. The spot also gives Greitens some cover and buys him some time to restock his campaign account following the competitive, and expensive, four-way GOP primary.
Koster, at last report, had nearly $11 million in his campaign warchest.
