TheChat: Donald Trump, choke artist?

Good morning.

▪ “Is Trump a choke artist?” — headline on a Washington Post story about, well, who else?

The Post’s point: The Republican front-runner continues to make unforced errors that are dragging down his campaign. Trump once famously called Mitt Romney the same thing.

▪ “We got to get our voice back.” — Chris Koster, the Democratic candidate for Missouri governor, speaking about the need to elect more Democrats to the General Assembly.

Koster said he’s focusing on Statehouse races besides his won campaign for the state’s highest office. (link via

▪ “We’ve got to reach out across the aisle. We have to reach minorities; we have to reach young people, and we have to reach independents.” — Bev Randles, the Republican candidate for Missouri lieutenant governor.

Randles, who’s from the Kansas City area, said she’s convinced that the GOP has the right message. The key, she said, is finding the right messenger. She says she’s that person.

▪ “I have been in touch with Mr. Trump directly and his campaign team about this issue.” — Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach acknowledging that he helped Donald Trump develop plans to force the Mexican government to pay for a border wall.

Kobach endorsed Trump this year and is an architect of perhaps the best-known Trump proposal.
