University of Missouri to pay Sen. Roy Blunt’s son to lobby state legislature

The University of Missouri system has signed a $10,000 a month contract with the son of U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt to lobby the Missouri Legislature.

Andy Blunt, who also serves as his father’s campaign manager for his re-election next year, is a well-known Jefferson City lobbyist whose firm currently has 37 other clients ranging from the Missouri Hospital Association to the tobacco company Altria Client Services LLC.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that the lobbying contract did not go through the typical competitive bidding process. A university spokesman says that was because, “given the extraordinary challenges the UM System is currently facing, it was imperative to very quickly communicate with legislative leaders.”

In a release announcing the hiring in The Missouri Times, Andy Blunt said he looked forward to “forging deeper partnerships between the university system and General Assembly to move our state forward.”

The university also just hired former Anthem Blue Cross-Blue Shield lobbyist David Smith to serve as director of state government relations at an annual salary of $190,000.
