TheChat: Roy Blunt not polling as well in his home state as Donald Trump

Good morning.

▪ “Blunt hasn't locked down the support of Trump's backers.” — Aaron Blake writing in The Washington Post, about Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt.

The Republican incumbent, Blunt leads Democrat Jason Kander by a single point in a new Monmouth University poll while the same poll showed Donald Trump leading Hillary Clinton by 14 points in Missouri. That underperformance on Blunt’s part worries Republicans. Incumbents usually run ahead of their party’s presidential nominees.

▪ “Senator Parson stood on the floor of the Senate and offered an amendment to add $50,000 for parking services for legislators in the Capitol. That’s a fact, you can look at the record in the Senate.” — Democrat Russ Carnahan, the candidate for lieutenant governor, accusing his opponent, Republican Mike Parson, of supporting valet parking for lawmakers in the state Capitol.

Parson called the charge an “outright lie.” (link via

▪ “Let’s talk, Steve.” — the message line of an email to yours truly from...the president of the United States.

Barack Obama wants to talk to me? Nawwww. He just wants me to send the Democrats money. Shoot! Was hoping for my first Oval Office interview.

▪ “Someone who wants to bully us.” — Hillary Clinton speaking of Donald Trump this week.

“She is likely to be under investigation for many years, probably concluding in a very large-scale criminal trial.” — Trump speaking of Clinton.

We’re in the end game here, folks, and both candidates are taking their best shots at their opponent. No one ever said democracy was pretty.
