That didn’t take long.
Jay Ashcroft said Thursday he’ll seek the Republican nomination for Missouri Secretary of State, setting up a likely primary battle with state Sen. Will Kraus of Lee’s Summit.
“Missouri is desperately in need of leaders who will fight for our state’s common sense conservative values,” Ashcroft said in a statement.
Kraus isn’t backing down. Thursday he too released a statement.

“We need a new leader, accustomed to taking on the hard fights, in the office of secretary of state,” he said.
The primary battle was joined after Jason Kander said he would forgo re-election and seek the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. Roy Blunt. That arguably makes the SoS job in Missouri more winnable, prompting the GOP primary.
No word on which Democrat might seek the job.
