Tensions between lawmakers and the free press are as old as the United States itself, and this photo that ran in The Star is a perfect illustration. Here is the original caption:

“Trying to see over the marble balcony high in the background are members of the Jefferson City press corps who are assigned to the Missouri House of Representatives. The press was confined to the fourth-floor space by Thomas D. Graham, speaker of the house, and James G. Trimble, floor leader. Graham has implied that the reporters may be permitted on the floor again if news stories about the house are more ‘favorable.’
