Billing itself as “Kansas City’s Dominant Store,” Kline’s took out nearly a full page of the Dec. 10, 1953, Kansas City Times to display its Christmas gift wares. On part of that page, Van Raalte nylons enticed woman with several styles, including versions with dark seams down the back. Some descriptions might be unfamiliar to modern-day readers: Denier is the thickness of the nylon thread; the lower the number, the more sheer the stocking. Gauge is the number of stitches per 1 1/2 inches; the more stitches, the better the fabric.
