Original caption from March 23, 1958: “Smiling broadly as they join forces at their concert are Jack Benny and Harry Truman, flanking Hans Schwieger, Philharmonic conductor, during an interlude in the evening of music and fun at the Music Hall.” The occasion was the Philharmonic’s Silver Anniversary Benefit.
The German Schwieger was the Kansas City Philharmonic’s music director for 23 years. He resigned acrimoniously in 1971, and the orchestra was dissolved in 1982 in “an untenable financial position,” according to a committee convened to study its problems.
