This photo originally ran in The Kansas City Star on May 15, 1949, under the headline, “The big, noisy City Market.” Its original caption:

Flowers and eggs are the chief items offered by Mrs. Tom Porter, who makes change after a sale. A “Saturday retailer” regular for twenty-two years, Mrs. Porter lives on a farm halfway between Liberty and Smithville, Mo.
