The Amoco Oil Company Refinery in Sugar Creek toppled 140-foot steel smokestacks no longer needed in the petroleum distillation process. Workmen first used a cutting torch before a cable was pulled, starting the towers’ descent. The smokestacks crashed to the ground amid clouds of dust at both ends. The smokestacks were purchased by Sugar Creek to be used as culverts.
