A Prairie Village holiday tradition that was a headache for neighbors

This photo from The Star’s historical archive was originally published on Nov. 28, 1979. It shows Mike Babick’s elaborate Christmas display on what was then his house at 7611 Falmouth St. in Prairie Village. At the time this image was published, Babick’s neighbors had begun to tire of the crowds visiting the street to marvel at the lights and other decorations. A subsequent item in The Star on Christmas Day 1991 noted that a traffic counter outside the house counted 250,000 vehicles passing by during the holiday season. Babick ended his displays in 2012 after city officials demanded that he pay for extra signs and security to manage the crowds.
