Original caption: “Apparatus of another day is being resurrected by prospectors in the Joplin district to carry on mining on small scale in old zinc and lead workings. The scene pictured above is near Galena, Kansas. The old derrick is built of cut timbers, and a horse-driven hoister is used to pull the ore tubs from the shaft. Such scenes are numerous, especially in the older sections of Kansas and Missouri.”
