Independence police officers took two men into custody on Saturday morning after finding illegal drugs, body armor and a suspicious package in a truck with stolen license plates.

Independence officers pulled over a white pickup truck at 3:08 a.m. at a Conoco gas station at 10600 U.S. Highway 24 in Sugar Creek after spotting the stolen plates on the vehicle.

Police closed off a block of U.S. Highway 24 in both directions during early morning hours while the bomb squad arrived to remove and detonate the device.

Traffic was re-opened after the package was safely detonated.

The two men have not yet been identified and police continue to investigate.
