A suspicious package was found outside Kansas City City Hall, 414 E. 12th St., early this morning. The Bomb and Arson squad of the Kansas City Police Department reportedly detonated the package shortly before 6:30 a.m.
A brief explosion was heard and bits of debris could be seen going up on the south lawn of City Hall.
In a statement, Kansas City police say security guards found a hard black box about 3:40 a.m. Monday at the front of City Hall. The contents appear to be a tripod and camera equipment.
Several intersections along Locust and Cherry streets near City Hall were blocked downtown. Streets were cleared shortly before 7 a.m.
The package was reportedly found on the south steps of City Hall.
