Kansas City police are investigating after a teenager was shot in the shoulder late Monday during a Fourth of July celebration near 20th Street and Benton Boulevard.
The victim told police he was setting off fireworks around 9:30 p.m. when he felt a sharp pain in his left shoulder. The victim at first thought he had been hit by fireworks but realized he had been shot. The bullet struck him at a downward angle.
Police said they believe the wound was the result of a descending bullet from celebratory gunfire.
Officers had canvassed several neighborhoods last week urging residents not to fire handguns and other weapons during the Independence Day weekend.
