A 42-year-old patient at Osawatomie State Hospital was accused Friday of raping an employee at the psychiatric facility.
Aaron C. Goodman of Hartford, Kan., was charged in Miami County District Court, where his bond was set at $250,000.
According to Osawatomie police, the assault occurred Tuesday night after a 21-year-old staff member went to a room to help a patient.
She was attacked as soon as she entered the room, police said.
Another patient heard sounds of a struggle, went into the room and stopped the attack until other staff members could arrive to help, according to police.
The victim was taken to a hospital and released later that night.
Goodman was arrested and taken to the Miami County jail. The Miami County attorney’s office said Friday that he did not yet have an attorney.
According to court records in Lyon County, Kan., Goodman recently was charged there with domestic battery and made his first court appearance Monday.
The records in that case don’t indicate why he was at the hospital the day after his court appearance in the domestic violence case.
A spokeswoman for the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services, which oversees the psychiatric facility, said federal and state law prevented her from commenting on individual patients.
But the spokeswoman said the unit where the alleged rape occurred was “fully staffed” at the time.
Attorneys involved in the Lyon County case could not be reached for comment Friday.
