Wichita police investigating sexual abuse case; 13-year-old arrested

Wichita police said Wednesday they are investigating several allegations of sexual abuse that involve eight children ranging in age from 2 to 9 years old.

A 13-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting the eight children.

Lt. James Espinoza, Wichita Police Department spokesman, said that police were called to a Wichita hospital about 7 p.m. Tuesday. A woman in her 30s reported her 9-year-old daughter had been sexually assaulted by a 13-year-old male, he said.

“Over several hours, Wichita police learned there were seven more victims besides the original one,” Espinoza said. “They are currently investigating.”

Espinoza would not comment on the relationship of the alleged victims with the 13-year-old boy. He said boys and girls are among the eight children.

“When we have this many victims, it is going to take time to get an actual timeline,” he said. “We are talking about victims who are very young.”

He said police planned to continue talking with the children throughout Wednesday.

“We have well-trained women and men, both in the Wichita Police Department and Sedgwick County’s Sheriff’s Office, who are trained in dealing with victims of this age,” Espinoza said. “They will be able to interview and get accurate information.”

More information is expected to be released Thursday.
