Kansas City police punch, knee armed robbery suspect after chase
Kansas City police arrested a suspected carjacker Wednesday morning following a 20-minute high-speed vehicle chase that led a team of officers through several residential areas, along busy roadways and intersections.
The pursuit began around 10 a.m. in the 8700 block of Winner Road following an armed carjacking. The gunman refused to stop for officers. The fleeing SUV then darted through residential traffic and along busy roadways in the eastern portion of Kansas City and Independence.
At one point, officers deployed a tire deflation device in an effort to stop the driver. However, the SUV continued traveling on its rims as it passed through several backyards, along residential sidewalks and finally into a wooded area near Winner Road and Interstate 435.
The driver eventually bailed from the moving SUV in a park area but fell after running several yards. A group of officers quickly chased him down. Officers repeatedly punched and kneed the suspect as he lay on the ground with his hands behind his back and appeared to have surrendered.
Police said the entire incident is being reviewed.
No injuries were reported.
