A 22-year-old killed Sunday in an alley outside a Crossroads Arts District strip club was working to turn his life around, his father said.

Jesse Harpool was shot and killed outside Temptations Gentleman’s Club near 15th Street and Grand Boulevard, Kansas City police said.

He had gone there with friends, one of whom had been arguing with a group of people who weren’t inside the club, said his father, Daniel Harpool. It escalated to the point that they planned a fight outside.

Months earlier, his father said, he’d warned his son against getting mixed up in violence.

Jesse Harpool had suffered a knife wound in a fight about a year ago, and his father told him, “You’re going to do something bad and not live to tell about it.”

Daniel Harpool said he learned his son was coherent after he was shot in the abdomen on Sunday. He told the people he was with that he was “going to be all right. … I’m going to be all right,” his father said.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

Daniel Harpool said the loss of his son made him numb. “I miss the guy already.”

His son had been living in Independence and had recently begun dating. He was employed at a moving company.

“He was going in the right direction but had his life cut short,” Daniel Harpool said.

His son had been quick to defend himself ever since grade school, when he stood up to bullies.

“He was always one to not back down,” Daniel Harpool said. “That’s what happened here. He was ready to put his dukes up, roll with the punches, but someone pulled a gun and shot him instead. That’s how they do it these days.”

Officers found Jesse Harpool after responding to the shooting about 3:15 a.m.

Anyone with information should call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

A GoFuneMe account was established by Jesse Harpool’s sister to help the family pay for funeral costs.
