Crossfire kills boy, 9, as gunbattle erupts between two cars in Kansas City

A 9-year-old boy was fatally shot Saturday night in Kansas City, possibly hit by gunfire exchanged between two vehicles near Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard and U.S. 71, according to police.

The victim had been riding in a third vehicle that was hit by the gunfire, the boy’s father told police. He did not immediately realize his son had been shot.

The victim was in Grandview when police were called, and officers found the boy in critical condition. He was taken to a hospital and was later pronounced dead.

Kansas City police are investigating the shooting and found a possible crime scene near Emanuel Cleaver II and U.S. 71.

No suspect information was immediately available.

Capt. Lionel Colón, a Kansas City police spokesman, said Kansas City police were not involved in any vehicle pursuit related to the incident and did not witness any of the events. He said detectives and investigators are gathering statements and evidence in an attempt to piece together the sequence of events.
