Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that injured a man inside a luxury apartment community, Overland Park police said Monday afternoon.
The shooting was reported just before 3 p.m. Monday outside an apartment building in the 13300 block of Larsen Lane. The apartment is located within The Sovereign at Overland Park. Police spokesman John Lacy addressed reporters at a media staging area at 133rd Street and Melrose Lane near where the shooting happened.
Lacy said officers were called out to the apartment building for a domestic disturbance involving a suicidal man at 2:49 p.m. Monday. In a news release Monday night, police said the man had called 911 and said he was armed with a knife, and was threatening to kill himself and his wife.
Earlier in the day, the police spokesman at the scene initially said he wasn’t sure if the man was armed when police shot him, but in a news release Monday night, Overland Park police said the man had “displayed a weapon and charged toward the responding officers.”
Two officers were at the apartment building when the shooting happened. Police said one of the officers shot the man twice.
“Officers responded and once we arrived to the residence, there was a male who came out of the residence, approaching the officers,” Lacy said at a media staging Monday afternoon. “I don’t know if he was displaying a gun, but he was acting very aggressively.”
The man who was shot by police was taken to an area hospital. He was listed in stable condition.
Both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues, the news release said. The Johnson County Officer-Involved Shooting Team is expected to investigate.
