A 41-year-old convicted sex offender was arrested Monday night after he allegedly fired a gun in the air as police officers drove by.

Courtney K. Edgar was charged Tuesday in federal court with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Two Kansas City police officers were on patrol Monday night near 40th Street and Indiana Avenue when they heard gunshots directly in front of their car, according to court documents.

They drove up to Edgar, who was the only person on the street, and asked him what he was doing.

“Just messing around,” he allegedly said.

As one officer started to get out of his car, Edgar took off running. As he ran, he threw an object on the ground before he stopped and gave up.

The object turned out to be a .380-caliber pistol. On the sidewalk where they first saw Edgar, the officers found four spent .380-caliber shell casings, according to the documents.

Edgar has previous felony convictions for rape, forcible sodomy and sexual abuse and is listed on the Missouri sex offender registry.
